Acne after 30? Tips to keep it under control

by Blanca

Yes, it seems unbelievable but it's true, acne does exist after 30. In my case, I've never had acne because I have extremely dry skin, but a few months ago, some pimples started appearing, always in the same area: my chin and jawline. However, at the same time, my forehead was getting drier and drier.

At first I thought it was something temporary, just a one-off problem, but after a few months I started investigating. It turns out that, according to some sources, up to 40% of adults suffer from acne after the age of 30, and of these, 75-85% are women .

What's the difference between teenage acne and acne after 30? The former mainly affects the T-zone, while the latter affects the chin, jawline, and even temples.

What are the main causes?

While genetic predisposition, diet, and skincare are very important, the main cause is hormonal (as expected), and apparently , the trigger in many cases is stress, which affects the secretion of our body's hormones . Yes, you read that right, stress is the culprit.

But let's get to the most important question : What can we do to combat it? After reading a lot and talking to a few dermatologists, I'd say the most important things can be summarized in 7 basic tips :

7 basic tips against acne

Keep your hands off your face: this goes without saying, you should avoid touching your face with your hands as much as possible because there are always bacteria present. It's true that sometimes your skin might even start to itch, but you have to bear it.

Healthy eating: While the link between diet and acne isn't strictly proven, a proper diet undoubtedly contributes to healthy skin in many cases . We all notice that when we take better care of ourselves, our skin is radiant.

Cleanse your skin thoroughly: it's essential to be rigorous and careful with your cleansing routine , both morning and night. For a truly exceptional cleanse, we recommend our FOREO Luna 3 device, an indispensable part of our facial routine.

It's important that when cleansing your skin , you don't slide cleansing pads or wipes across your face. You should cleanse your skin by gently patting it to avoid spreading dirt and infections.

Additionally, it's important to use gentle soap and micellar water on your skin. Sometimes, in an effort to avoid acne, we use harsh products that also kill the good bacteria on our skin and make us more vulnerable to external aggressors.

Hydrate: it is true that you have to avoid oily textures (I only avoid them in that area because the rest of my face needs them as my skin is so dry), but we must nourish it anyway.

Finally, relax: if stress is one of the main causes, relaxing will clearly be a great help. There's no excuse now, try practicing 15 minutes of mindfulness in the morning or at night; your skin will thank you.
