Infrared LED Mat: it isn't a heated blanket, it's full-body photobiomodulation

by Laura

The first time someone sees the Infrared LED Mat, they almost always think the same thing: a heated blanket. You lie down on it and it wraps your body from feet to shoulders, so the confusion is understandable. But what happens inside is very different.

The Infrared LED Mat doesn't work with temperature. It works with light, and that light acts where the body's energy is born: inside the cell.

In this article we explain exactly what full-body photobiomodulation is, what each of its three wavelengths does, why direct contact with the skin changes the result, and what you can expect, and when, from a 20-minute session at home.

Infrared LED Mat vs heated blanket: why they aren't the same

The difference isn't the format, it's the mechanism. A heated blanket works by raising the temperature of the body's surface. The Infrared LED Mat emits specific wavelengths of red and infrared light that the cell absorbs and turns into energy (Avci et al., 2013).

Heated blanketInfrared LED Mat
Works on the surface, through temperature. Works inside the cell, through light.
The effect depends on how long it holds the temperature. The effect depends on wavelength, irradiance and consistent sessions.
Doesn't work on specific cellular processes. Stimulates cellular energy (ATP) production in the mitochondria.
The sensation is the goal. The sensation is comforting, but the goal is a biological response.

That's why the Infrared LED Mat isn't a heated blanket: it's full-body photobiomodulation.

What photobiomodulation is and how it works in the cell

Photobiomodulation is the stimulation of cellular processes using low-intensity red and infrared light. Its main mechanism is well described: light is absorbed by a component of the mitochondria, cytochrome c oxidase, which supports the production of ATP, the molecule the cell uses as energy for its repair and regeneration processes (de Freitas and Hamblin, 2016).

Put simply, the process follows three steps:

  • Light delivers energy to the cell. Red and infrared wavelengths penetrate the tissue without damaging it.
  • The mitochondria turn it into ATP. It's the energy base of every cellular process.
  • The cell activates its own mechanisms. Repair, inflammatory regulation and collagen production, among others (Hernández-Bule et al., 2024).

It's the same principle the Silicone LED Mask applies to the face. The difference is the surface: with the Infrared LED Mat, light works on the whole body in a single session.

Three wavelengths, three depths

Each wavelength reaches a different depth in the tissue. It isn't that one is more powerful than another: the longer the wavelength, the deeper it penetrates (Avci et al., 2013). That's why the Infrared LED Mat combines three.

WavelengthHow deep it reachesWhat it supports
630 nm · red light Dermis Activates fibroblasts, the cells that produce collagen and elastin: firmness and elasticity.
830 nm · near infrared Connective tissue Cellular energy and inflammatory regulation.
1072 nm · deep infrared Internal layers Less light scattering: reaches deeper layers and more tissue.

Why direct contact with the skin matters

In photobiomodulation, the result doesn't depend on wavelength alone, but also on parameters such as irradiance, meaning how much light energy actually reaches each centimetre of skin (Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014). And irradiance decreases with distance: the further away the light source, the more energy is lost along the way.

The Infrared LED Mat is designed to remove that distance:

  • More than 3,700 light emitting points, evenly distributed across the entire surface.
  • Direct contact: no space between the light and the skin, unlike conventional panels.
  • Uniform irradiance: energy reaches the whole body evenly, with no areas receiving less.
  • Wraparound neoprene: the light works right against the skin, from feet to shoulders, with side openings so you can bring your arms out and read or use your phone during the session.

The six wellness pillars of the Infrared LED Mat

The Infrared LED Mat works on six different processes in a single 20-minute session, each linked to one or more of its wavelengths:

Wellness pillarWavelengthWhat happens
1. Cellular energy 630 nm Activates ATP production in the mitochondria (de Freitas and Hamblin, 2016).
2. Inflammatory regulation 830 nm Works on chronic low-grade inflammation (Hamblin, 2017).
3. Firmness and density 630 + 830 nm Stimulates collagen and elastin production throughout the body (Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014).
4. Rest 830 nm Supports natural melatonin production and reduces oxidative stress (Zhao et al., 2012).
5. Microcirculation and detoxification 1072 nm Improves tissue oxygenation and the elimination of toxins.
6. Muscle recovery 630 + 830 nm Supports muscle fibre repair after moderate training (Ferraresi et al., 2016).

What you'll notice and when

20 minutes per session, at home. The device switches off by itself when it's done.

From the first session: better circulation and rest.

From 28 days: results in skin firmness and density start to show.

The difference in timing comes down to the type of process. Circulation and melatonin respond immediately. Collagen production, on the other hand, needs repeated stimuli over time: the fibroblast responds to consistency, not to the intensity of a single session.

How to use it in your routine

The Infrared LED Mat is designed to become part of your rest routine:

  • When: preferably at night, when its effect on rest and recovery makes the most sense.
  • How long: 20-minute sessions. It can be used every day, up to 40 minutes in total (two sessions).
  • How: on clean, dry skin, in direct contact with the mat and without clothing that blocks the light whenever possible.

Going over 40 minutes a day doesn't add any extra benefit: the cell has a limit to how much energy it can receive per session, and beyond that, extra time doesn't translate into a better result.

Ideas worth clearing up

  • “If it's a blanket, it's for sweating.” That isn't what it does. The Infrared LED Mat works at a cellular level, not through temperature, and the sensation during the session is simply comforting.
  • “More time, better results.” No. Beyond 40 minutes a day, the cell can't take in more energy.
  • “It helps you lose weight.” It doesn't contribute to weight loss. It can, however, help restore skin firmness after significant weight loss.
  • “It's only for the skin.” Firmness is one of its six pillars, but it also works on cellular energy, inflammatory regulation, rest, microcirculation and muscle recovery.
  • “One intense session makes up for weeks without using it.” Photobiomodulation works as a progressive stimulus: what makes the difference is regularity.

Before your first session

The Infrared LED Mat complements your usual cosmetic routine as well as cosmetic and medical aesthetic treatments. Even so, keep the following in mind:

  • If you have a recent tattoo or an open wound, wait at least a month before treating that area.
  • If you have a medical condition or are undergoing treatment, check with your doctor before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Infrared LED Mat a heated blanket? No. A heated blanket works on the surface through temperature. The Infrared LED Mat emits red and infrared light that the cell absorbs and turns into energy (ATP) to activate its repair processes.

What is full-body photobiomodulation? It's the application of low-intensity red and infrared light to the whole body to stimulate cellular processes such as energy production, inflammatory regulation and collagen synthesis.

Why does the Infrared LED Mat use three wavelengths? Because each one reaches a different depth: red light (630 nm) works on the dermis, near infrared (830 nm) on connective tissue and deep infrared (1072 nm) on the innermost layers.

When will I notice results? Circulation and rest are usually noticed from the first session. In skin firmness and density, results start to show from 28 days.

How long and how often should I use it? 20-minute sessions, every day if you like, up to a maximum of 40 minutes a day. Preferably at night.

Does the Infrared LED Mat help with weight loss? No. Its value lies in cellular energy, firmness, rest and recovery, not in weight loss.

Quick glossary

Photobiomodulation: stimulation of cellular processes using wavelengths of red and infrared light.

ATP (adenosine triphosphate): the molecule produced by the mitochondria that the cell uses as energy.

Mitochondria: the cell structures responsible for producing energy.

Irradiance: the amount of light energy that reaches each centimetre of surface.

Fibroblast: a cell in the dermis that produces collagen and elastin.

In summary

The Infrared LED Mat isn't a heated blanket, even if they look alike from the outside. The difference is the mechanism: instead of working on the surface, photobiomodulation takes red and infrared light to the cell, where the mitochondria turn it into energy to activate their own repair processes. With three wavelengths, three depths and direct contact with the skin, the Infrared LED Mat works on six wellness pillars in 20 minutes. It isn't heat. It's light.
